You are likely to spend more cash on your snowboarding jacket than any other piece of your
snowboarding attire. It is what will identify you on the slopes, and hopefully also keep you warm and dry. At the
end of the season, you and your jacket are like best friends. Here's how to make that friendship get off to a good start.
Venting refers to the breathability of the material of the jacket (letting perspiration out) as well as features that
allow the jacket to vent extra warmth. Look for "pit zips" - zippers that open underneath the arms to let heat escape
on warm days or after hiking the pipe, as well as other venting zippers across the chest or back.

Inexpensive jackets may have a waterproof coating that wears off with time, while expensive jackets are actually made
out of a waterproof material (such as Gore-tex). High-end jackets will also have extra features such as taped seams -
we've seen a few that even have waterproof zippers.

Many models of boots come with an inner and outer boot that each lace up independently. This dual system offers a
more precise and adjustable fit, as well as the added benefit of being able to remove the inner liner overnight for
dry boots the next day.

Some jackets provide all kinds of extra pockets for stashing your goggles, tool, lock, lunch... some
even have a special clear plastic pocket for your season's pass. Hoods are nice on stormy days; I like ones that can
be completely removed when the weather is good. Powder cuffs, although designed for heavy snowfall, are also good for
keeping out chilly drafts.

What is the difference between a US$100 and a US$375 jacket? The amount of venting and amount of waterproofing are two
factors that drive up the price of a jacket (see below). Basic jackets will have no venting or extra waterproofing;
expensive jackets provide lots of venting and go to extra lengths to keep out the moisture.
